A clean two-foot morning can feel very different when there is a cold southerly blowing up the coast. That is why the answer to what wetsuit thickness you need is never just about the temperature on your weather app. Water temperature, wind, cloud cover, how long you will be out, and how much you feel the cold all matter.

For most surfers, the right wettie is the one you stop noticing after the first paddle out. It keeps the chill off without making your shoulders feel like they are fighting a set of rubber bands. Get the thickness right and you will stay in the water longer, paddle better and enjoy more sessions through the year.

What wetsuit thickness means

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimetres and usually written with two or three numbers, such as 3/2mm or 4/3mm. The first number refers to neoprene around the torso, where warmth matters most. The second number is for the arms and legs, where thinner neoprene helps with flexibility. A 3/2mm steamer, for example, has 3mm through the body and 2mm through the limbs.

Some suits use a third number, such as 5/4/3mm. This normally means the chest and back are 5mm, the legs are 4mm and the arms are 3mm. The exact panel layout varies between brands, so it is worth checking the product details rather than assuming every suit is cut the same way.

Thickness is only one part of warmth. Quality neoprene, sealed seams, a good neck seal and a close fit can make a lighter suit feel warmer than a poorly fitting thicker one. More rubber is not automatically better if it leaves you stiff, exhausted or overheating by the time you reach the lineup.

Australia covers a lot of coastline and a lot of water temperatures, so this is a useful starting point rather than a hard rule. If you are unsure between two options, think about your cold tolerance and the sessions you actually surf - not just the warmest day you hope to get.

A summer springsuit is still a smart bit of kit. It takes the edge off early-morning wind, protects your torso from wax rash, and provides more coverage than boardies or swimmers without the heat of a full steamer. For groms and beginners spending plenty of time in the water, that extra coverage can make a big difference to how long they happily stay out.

Start with water temperature, then factor in the session

Air temperature can be misleading. A sunny 22°C winter day may look warm from the car park, but 17°C water and a steady offshore can cool you down quickly once you are wet. On the other hand, a cloudy 19°C day in warm summer water might only call for a thin top.

How you surf changes the answer too. A short, high-energy surf where you are constantly paddling generates more body heat than a long wait at a slow point break. A beginner may spend more time sitting, floating and climbing back onto a soft board, while a confident surfer paddling hard between peaks may be fine in a lighter suit.

Wind is the other big one. A southerly can cut through a damp wetsuit during a long paddle back up the beach. If you regularly surf exposed breaks, dawn patrols or winter afternoons, leaning warmer is rarely a bad call. You can always flush a little water through a suit that is slightly too warm. Shivering through a session is much harder to fix.

Choose the thickness that suits your body

Two mates can surf the same beach in the same conditions and need different wetties. Some people run warm and are happy in a 3/2mm for almost all NSW winter. Others feel cold after 45 minutes and will be far more comfortable in a 4/3mm.

Your build, fitness, food and hydration all affect how you handle the cold. So does time in the ocean. Regular surfers often adapt better to cooler water than someone returning after months away. There is no prize for wearing the thinnest suit possible. The right call is the one that lets you stay comfortable, alert and keen for another paddle out.

If you are buying for a child, do not size up just to get another season from the suit. Loose neoprene lets cold water move around the body, which defeats the point of wearing it. A well-fitting 3/2mm often does a better job than an oversized 4/3mm, and it is easier for young surfers to move and paddle in.

Fit and construction can matter as much as millimetres

A wetsuit should feel snug while dry, particularly through the lower back, chest, neck and crotch. It should not restrict breathing or create painful pressure across the shoulders. Once it is wet, neoprene gives slightly, but a baggy suit will not magically tighten up in the water.

Check for gaps under the arms, behind the knees and around the lower back. These spaces allow flushing, where cold water continually enters and circulates through the suit. A little water inside a wetsuit is normal - your body warms that thin layer - but a suit that flushes constantly will leave you cold no matter how thick it is.

Seams are worth paying attention to in cooler conditions. Flatlock seams are common in warmer-water suits and can let in more water. Glued and blind-stitched seams offer better warmth, while taped seams add another layer of protection where cold water would otherwise creep in. Chest-zip and zip-free suits can also reduce flushing and improve flexibility, though the best entry system is the one you can comfortably get on and off.

Do you need boots, gloves or a hood?

Before buying an ultra-thick steamer, consider accessories. Cold hands and feet can end a session even when your core is warm enough. In proper winter conditions, 3-5mm surf boots are often the most useful addition, particularly for surfers who get numb feet or walk over cold rocks and reef.

Gloves and hoods make sense in the coldest parts of the country, but most NSW surfers will get more use from a good 4/3mm steamer and boots first. Accessories affect feel on the board, so add them when conditions genuinely call for them rather than wearing every bit of rubber at the first sign of winter.

One wetsuit or a small rotation?

If you surf regularly, two suits are usually more practical than trying to make one thickness cover every season. A 3/2mm steamer paired with a springsuit or 2mm long-sleeve top covers a huge range of Australian conditions. Add a 4/3mm if you feel the cold, surf long winter sessions, or live somewhere the water stays properly chilly.
