Surfboard Repair Guide for Dings Big and Small

A tiny crack on the rail can look harmless in the carpark, then turn into a heavy, waterlogged headache after a few surfs. This surfboard repair guide covers the fixes most surfers can handle at home, plus the warning signs that mean it is smarter to take your board to a professional. A clean repair keeps your board lighter, stronger and ready for the next run of waves.

Start by working out how serious the ding is

Give the damaged area a proper look before reaching for resin. A surface scratch that has not broken through the glass usually needs no repair at all. If you can catch a fingernail in the crack, see exposed foam, or notice a soft spot around it, water can get in and the board needs attention.

Press gently around the ding. Soft, springy glass can point to delamination, while a crack running along the stringer may involve more than a quick patch. Check fin boxes, leash plugs and the nose and tail carefully too. These are common impact points, and a loose fin box or plug can allow water into a much larger area than you can see.

If the board has been in the water since it was damaged, drain and dry it before doing anything else. Stand it ding-down in a shaded, ventilated spot. Avoid baking it in full sun or leaving it in a hot car - heat can expand trapped air and moisture, making the damage worse. A small ding may dry in a day or two; a board that feels noticeably heavy, drips water or has yellowing foam can need much longer and may be best assessed by a repairer.

Know your board before choosing resin

The biggest rule in any surfboard repair guide is simple: match the resin to the board construction. Get this wrong and you can melt the foam beneath the glass.

Most traditional PU surfboards have polyurethane foam under fibreglass and use polyester resin. Many epoxy boards use EPS foam, which is usually white with a visible bead-like texture under the glass. EPS foam must be repaired with epoxy resin. Polyester resin attacks EPS foam, so never use a standard polyester ding-repair kit on an EPS or epoxy board.

Not sure what you ride? Check the board’s label, model details or ask the shop where you bought it. Epoxy boards are often lighter in colour and may be labelled EPS/Epoxy, but appearances are not a guarantee. When in doubt, use an epoxy repair system or get experienced advice before mixing anything.

What you need for a tidy home repair

For a straightforward rail, nose or tail ding, a few basic supplies will do the job. Set up outside or in a well-ventilated workspace, out of direct sun and away from kids, pets and flames. Resin fumes and sanding dust are not something to tough out.

  • Resin and hardener suited to your board, plus the correct mixing ratio
  • Fibreglass cloth for any break that exposes foam or has cracked glass around it
  • Sandpaper in coarse, medium and fine grits, with a sanding block
  • Masking tape, mixing cups, stirrers, a blade or scissors, gloves and a dust mask
Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection while mixing and sanding. A proper particulate mask is a good call for fibreglass dust. If you are using a resin system with strong fumes, improve ventilation and follow the product safety directions closely.

Surfboard repair guide: fixing a small crack or chip

Once the board is completely dry, lightly sand around the damage until you reach solid, clean glass. The aim is to remove loose fibres, wax, dirt and any fractured laminate, not to grind a crater into the board. Wipe away dust and mask the surrounding area to keep the repair neat.

For a shallow chip with no exposed foam, mixed resin can be enough. Apply a small amount, allow it to cure as directed, then sand it smooth. Keep the repair just proud of the original surface before sanding. If you try to make it perfectly flat while the resin is wet, you will usually leave a low spot that needs another coat.

When foam is exposed, first fill any deep void with a resin thickened using the filler recommended for your system. Let that cure, then sand it into the board’s original shape. Do not rush this shaping stage - a lumpy rail repair can catch water, feel awkward under your hand and look rough every time you carry the board down the beach.

Next, cut a piece of fibreglass cloth that extends beyond the damaged zone by a couple of centimetres. For a deeper ding, use two patches, with the second slightly larger than the first. Wet the cloth out with resin until it turns transparent, lay it flat over the repair and gently work out air bubbles. Too much resin adds weight without adding much strength, so use enough to wet the cloth rather than flooding the area.

Let it cure fully. Cure time changes with product type, temperature and humidity, so the label is more reliable than a fixed timetable. Once hard, sand the edges until they blend into the existing glass. Apply a final hot coat of resin if needed to fill the weave, cure again, then sand progressively finer for a smooth finish.

A home repair does not need to look factory-fresh to be watertight and strong. Still, take your time around the rail. That curve gets flexed, bumped and grabbed constantly, so it deserves a little extra care.

UV repair kits are handy, but not for every job

UV-cure products are brilliant for a quick fix before a holiday or a run of clean swell. They cure fast in sunlight and can be convenient for small, dry PU-board dings. Their limits matter, though. Shade, cloudy weather and a repair that is too thick can leave resin partly uncured. They are also not a substitute for rebuilding smashed foam, repairing a cracked fin box or fixing structural damage.

Use a UV product only when it is compatible with your board. For epoxy boards, choose an epoxy-specific repair product. A few extra minutes spent checking the label beats watching a chemical reaction chew into your foam.

Repairs that should go to a professional

There is no shame in handing over a difficult repair. A good repairer can restore strength and shape where a DIY patch might only cover the problem. Take the board in if there is major delamination, a snapped or badly cracked stringer, extensive water ingress, damage around a fin box or leash plug, or a crease across the deck or bottom.

The same goes for older boards with prized artwork, timber veneers or complex colour work. Those repairs can be done, but matching a tint, re-setting hardware and preserving the board’s flex takes specialist materials and experience. Keep new dings from becoming repeat jobs

Most damage happens out of the water. Use a board bag for car trips, secure boards carefully on roof racks and do not lean them where a gust can send them onto concrete. In the lineup, give yourself room when kicking out and avoid using the board as a shield in the shorebreak. Even a quality board has limits when it meets another surfer’s rail or the sandbank at speed.

After a surf, rinse off salt and give the board a quick once-over while you are taking off the legrope. Catching a fresh crack before the next session is the easiest repair you will ever make.
